National Association Of Plant Breeders Registration Cost SupportThe funding requested here will provide travel and registration cost support for deserving students and practicing plant breeders to ensure wide representation and discussion as we seek to move forward with the objectives and goals identified through the NAPB strategic plan.
National Association Of Plant Breeders Update Their ProfileThe 2015 conference will be conducted under the theme Identifying and Utilizing Genetic Diversity and will use AFRI funding to: 1) increase educational, networking and input opportunities for students, early career scientists, and under-represented groups; 2) begin development of a coherent national plan for plant breeding utilizing the framework of the USDA REE Plant Breeding Roadmap; 3) evaluate and disseminate best practices for plant breeding education; 4) ascertain the conditions under which plant breeding programs thrive; and 5) identify best management practices for support of plant breeding at public institutions. All conference speakers are invited and confirmed.Speakers and moderators invited to this meeting have already been carefully selected to represent a diversity of crop focus, region, institutional affiliation, and stage of career. Special efforts will be made to attract undergraduate and graduate students and provide awards for outstanding presentations. Additional efforts will be made to recruit participation by underrepresented groups and develop new approaches to education and training through working with WSU39;s newly-established Center for Transformational Learning and Leadership (CTLL) ( ). An entire session of this conference will be led by Dr. Kim Kidwell of the CTLL with a focus on new approaches to develop diverse work skills in a diverse work place. A final luncheon sponsored by Monsanto will feature rotating small group discussions around opportunities to work with various industry partners to apply learning to actual work scenarios as part of a high quality training or career building experience. The 2015 NAPBPBCC meeting highlighted the latest research from invited speakers and award winners from both graduate students and practicing scientists, with sessions focusing on 39;Exploiting genetic resources in public and private breeding programs39;, 39;Plant breeding organization, policy, and funding39; and workshops on 39;Breeding for consumer product quality: successes and failures39; and 39;Diverse skills needed for a diverse plant breeding workforce39. Travel awards (as summarized later) provided the opportunity to increase the diversity and depth of participation in discussions focusing on implementation of the NAPB strategic plan. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project providedEducational and networking opportunities were enhanced for plant breeding students by providing travel awards.
